It's Hard to Be a Human Who Can Take it Like a Man

about

In August 2018 (which it still is as I write this), went to a massive summer event with some 175 participants called Circle Songs led by Bobby McFerrin and a team of vocalist/teachers, and on the way home, wrote lyrics to this song (headlights and exit signs of the drive actually showing up in the song). The very next day I happened to have a date to go a recording studio and with the collaboration of Artist, Musician and Studio Wizard Jim Matus, recorded this song that includes a Circle-songian vocal break with 7 tracks of interlockng voices. Bobby, Joey, Judi, every one of the 175 of us, thank you. And to you, dear browser, while you're at a computer screen, as a PSA, I say, look up Circle Singing and find the next one at a church basement or living room near you. Circle Singing.

I don’t want to fall asleep
But I need time to settle down
While the world is sleeping,
nothing else will happen

Headlights in the rear view mirror
illuminate the exit signs
watch for merging traffic when the
lights are flashing

Alone along the road
your destination is the home
that you hold in mind
we live on hopes
without a reservation
it’s hard to be a human
who can take it like a man

We get used to how it is
maybe we are born that way
sometimes it gets so hard that you can’t
keep from laughing

I couldn’t bear to lose your love
so easily I lose my way
but what I’m calling love might be
an inner projection

Chorus:
Alone along the road . .

[2x instrumental verse]

Love the heart that lifts you up
Live the life that lets you see
Giving what you got
will end you up
getting

I don’t want to make things hard
don’t know other ways to be
I’d give up the effort if I knew
that I could take it
I’d give up the effort if I knew
that I could take it
I’d give up the effort if I knew
that I could take it
