Sometimes I say, "Hey, why the 3-minute pop idiom? Why not make 11-minute or 54-second songs? I just looked this up: The reason pop songs songs were originally three minutes, is because in the early 1900s, a 10-inch phonograph records rotated at 78 RPM and could only hold about 3 minutes of music.

But anyway, I'm easily swept up in mystique of the tradition. To me there's nothing like the glory of a car radio blasting on an interstate highway, with some emotional plaintive refrain, no matter how otherwise nonsensical. These experiences guide me. I want to make songs that sound good at 65 Miles Per Hour or more. Hope this qualifies.
