What About the River?

by Michael Silverstone

/

about

I see a lot of sunrises on the highway.
And you can see how beautiful the land is off in the distance and right under our feet.
I found all these details whenever the car stopped. I scribbled them on an envelope which I just found stuck in a book, right after I made up this new riff. Hope that isn't too much information.

What About the River

Gunmetal sunrise over the highway
that dawns on drivers
alone in their cars
fields of marsh grass off in the distance
Is all that is calling you all that you are?
What about the river?

Christmas lights in late November
cell phone towers up in the trees
What kind of world would you have wanted?
What kind of world could it still be?
--And what about the river?

It's not that hard to let the change in you begin
You're not wrong
You're not wrong
You find yourself with a belief you're living in
--for so long
--for so long

Tank truck trailers flash on the shoulder
slowly tail lights draw to a stop
transmission towers stretched over the landscape
has anyone else here had enough?
--And what about the river?
