about

Was thinking how hard it can be to make anything without having it wither under real or imagined criticism sometimes.

People give everybody, even people I consider sublime musicians, a hard time. I give myself such a hard time, sometimes. It's dopey to give yourself a hard time, but I do. A few nights ago, I started to laugh, going to sleep realizing this. It was liberating, to give up being sad, oh boo hoo, but I was also feeling a little bit feisty, so I was in the mood to write a good song.

Then I woke up and wrote this one, and I hope my inner critic and friends can let up so I can have clear space to do the kind of music I wanna, not because someone else thinks it should be another way. We all can go and make the music that answers our sense of what it should be, and I hope we're all happy with it. I'm happy with this one even if no one listens to it, and somebody tells me they don't like it for some reason. If that happens, I'll write another one that they won't like just as much that's even better and more overproduced and has rhymes in it or whatever is bothering them, because that's the kind of mood I'm in right now.

Our Songs
Music and Lyrics by Michael Alan Silverstone 11/30/11 ©2011 Mr. Silverstone Music Publishing/ASCAP

Some may criticize and doubt our intent
and make us wonder where our innocence went
after giving what should never get lent
ignoring the signs

You can try to tell me now what to do
but I believe I shouldn’t listen to you
if I don’t mix a grain of salt in or two
at the time

There are an awful lot of reasons to stop
right in our tracks
But even more to ignore
what would slight us
in the slightest

But there is no time like right now to begin
and we lack motive to give up or give in
‘cause where we’re going to
won’t be where we’ve been
after a while

I have had some resolutions to make
when I’ve had more than just a little at stake
and was depending on a lucky break
to pull me through

There are an awful lot of reasons to stop
in our tracks
But even more to ignore
what would slight us
or the sound and the sense
of our song
our song
the sound and the sense of our song
our song, our song
the sound and the sense of our song
and our songs, our songs
the sound and the sense of our songs
our songs, our songs

the sound and the sense of our songs
