Flying Blind (Guitar Solo Version)

about

(This is the slow, and loud electric guitar solo version of this song.)

In July of this year, I went to Richard Thompson's "Frets and Refrains" acoustic guitar and songwriting camp.

Was in a singing class and the incomparable teacher, songwriter and performer, Sloan Wainwright--sister of Loudon, aunt of Rufus, Matha and Lucy--happened to ask me how I thought of myself as a singer." I said, "I really don't know--I'm self-taught and I don't know what it sounds like to someone who's not me. It's like I'm flying blind through clouds." She said, "Doesn't that that sounds like a title of a song?"

Then went into a guitar playing class in a music barn with Richard Thompson, listed as one of Rolling Stone Magazine's greatest 100 guitarists of all time, and who's acts of chivalry with the guitar and pen have brought some rare and genuine honor to a historically bloodthirsty British Empire, garnering him the designation O.B.E. by Queen Elizabeth II. He showed us how to slay dragons via open tuning with a dropped-D bass note that drones and how to use a hybrid picking style that plucks notes with fingers while the thumb and index fingers hold the pick. I was incredibly excited to be playing Richard Thompson-style along with Richard Thompson for 20 or 30 whole seconds even if it happened to be in a crowd of 100 other people with guitars in their laps as well.

Then in songwriting class, the dazzlingly gifted singer/songwriter, Teddy Thompson, suggested that we challenge ourselves to write a song in no more than an hour using exactly three chords. He clearly thought this was possible, and so we all generally believed it for long enough to do it ourselves.

That's a lot of help for one song. Brittany Spears should have such a dream team. In fairness, hers does probably includes a publicist and a team of accountants though. . .

It's hot out here
and it's hot inside this morning
and I can’t even stand to be at home

Hard to tolerate
the endlessness of all this longing
seems like in my dreams I’ve been
carrying on alone

I can feel the weight of the morning
but I can’t see the sum of the night
--because I’m flying blind.

You can never trust what you might tell yourself
But you can never go believe a lie
You’ve had to live your life at times
just rolling in the space between the arrows.
Having to believe and just proceed
in the directions assigned

I can feel the weight of the morning
but I can’t see the sum of the night
--because I’m flying blind.

And we go on and on and on and on
--on and on and on and on

I just wanna trust that I know what I’m doing
I just wanna know that you’ll be mine
and I just like to be
some kind of a singer
and I like liking what is hard to find

I can feel the weight of the morning
but I can’t see the sum of the night
--because I’m flying blind
I'm flying blind
I'm flying blind
I'm flying blind
